    CD36, a transmembrane glycoprotein, is widely expressed on various cell types including macrophages, adipocytes, and endothelial cells. It serves as a multifunctional receptor involved in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and immune responses. CD36 facilitates the uptake of fatty acids, oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and other lipid molecules, contributing to cellular lipid homeostasis and foam cell formation in atherosclerosis. Additionally, CD36 recognizes and binds to a diverse range of ligands including microbial pathogens, apoptotic cells, and thrombospondin-1, mediating phagocytosis, innate immune responses, and tissue remodeling. Understanding CD36's diverse functions is crucial for elucidating its roles in health and disease.
