  • Background
    • Background

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is an enzyme encoded by the PCSK9 gene. It plays a critical role in regulating cholesterol levels by binding to low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLRs) on the surface of liver cells, promoting their degradation and reducing LDL cholesterol clearance from the bloodstream. Elevated PCSK9 levels are associated with increased LDL cholesterol levels and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Inhibiting PCSK9 function with monoclonal antibodies or small molecule inhibitors has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy for lowering LDL cholesterol levels and reducing cardiovascular risk. PCSK9 inhibitors block the interaction between PCSK9 and LDLRs, leading to increased LDLR expression and enhanced LDL cholesterol clearance from the blood.
