Background
Human Nephrin, encoded by NPHS1, is a key structural and signaling protein of the slit diaphragm between podocyte foot processes in the renal glomerulus. It plays an essential role in maintaining the glomerular filtration barrier and preventing proteinuria. Mutations or reduced expression of NPHS1 are associated with congenital nephrotic syndrome and other glomerular diseases. Nephrin also participates in podocyte cell adhesion and intracellular signaling pathways that regulate cytoskeletal organization and filtration barrier integrity, making it an important marker and research target in kidney disease, podocyte biology, and chronic kidney disease studies.
