  • Background
    • Background

Enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), also known simply as GFP, is a protein renowned for its ability to emit a brilliant green fluorescence upon exposure to light within the blue to ultraviolet spectrum. Notably, EGFP possesses a remarkable feature: it can autonomously form an internal chromophore without necessitating any additional enzymes, substrates, cofactors, or gene products aside from molecular oxygen. This characteristic makes EGFP an ideal candidate as a reporter gene. Researchers frequently employ EGFP to express it throughout an organism, in specific organs or selected cells of interest, often utilizing transgenic techniques. Importantly, the introduction of EGFP into an organism's genome or that of its offspring does not induce any genomic alterations. EGFP has been successfully expressed across a diverse array of species, spanning from bacteria, fungi, and yeast to mammals, including human cells.
