Background
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), also known as human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) or human orthopneumovirus, is a contagious negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It causes respiratory tract infections, with infants experiencing frequent hospitalizations and later-life reinfections of milder intensity. RSV is a significant pathogen across all age groups, particularly prevalent during winter, leading to bronchiolitis in infants, common colds in adults, and more severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia in the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
